The Caribbean region faces increasing threats from extreme weather and seismic events. There has been no greater indicator of this growing threat than Hurricane Beryl, which became the earliest Category 4 hurricane in Atlantic history in June 2024. Beryl devastated Carriacou and Union Island in Grenada, severely damaging or destroying over 90% of homes. This disaster, along with the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Haiti in 2021, underscore the urgent need for stronger housing and infrastructure resilience in the region.

To address these challenges, the Physical and Environmental Planning Sector Subcommittee (PEPSSC) of the Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) Council of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency, supported by Global Affairs Canada, will host a 4-part webinar series in September titled “Integrity and Safety in Residential Construction: Constructing Homes for Tomorrow and the Role of Building Standards.”

The series will focus on the newly approved CARICOM Regional Code of Practice for the Construction of Houses (CRCP 10:2023), which provides guidance for building structures that can withstand Category 5 hurricanes and magnitude 7 earthquakes.

This webinar is essential for decision-makers, financial providers, and insurance agencies to understand the importance of adopting these standards. Participants will engage with experts through presentations, panel discussions, and Q&A sessions, all aimed at fostering a culture of compliance and resilience in the Caribbean and emphasizing the importance of safeguarding infrastructure and supporting sustainable development in the face of climate change and natural disasters.
