Grenada Boosting Capacity in Mass and Temperature

Submitted by the Grenada Bureau of Standards (GDBS)

The Grenada Bureau of Standards joins the standards community in the commemoration of World Metrology Day 2021 (May 20). The theme for this year is ‘Measurement for Health’. This theme was chosen to create awareness of the important role measurement plays in health, and thus in the wellbeing of every one.

The Bureau is the National Metrology Institute for Grenada after receiving the mandate through the passing of the Metrology Act of 1997 and the Weights & Measures Regulations in 1998. The Bureau provides legal and industrial metrology services and is responsible for maintaining the national measurement references.

As it relates to this year’s theme, the Bureau has established capabilities in the areas of mass and temperature metrology. As one of its strategic goals, the Bureau is looking to enhance these service areas and is now actively pursuing the establishment of calibration and verification services for blood pressure meters. This suite of services supports our health sector to ensure that the users are confident in the measurements provided.

Additionally, the Bureau supports the activities of entities engaged in food safety testing through the provision of verification, calibration and consultancy services.

In April 2018, Grenada became a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Bureau is in the process of establishing the necessary framework to become the regulatory body for radiation sources for Grenada.  As the regulatory body, establishment of the relevant measurement infrastructure is necessary to ensure compliance to all the applicable safety standards.
