The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education-Guyana recently concluded the second edition of the Standards in Academia Quiz Competition held during May and June 2022. The 2022 competition involved pupils of twenty (20) selected Primary Schools across the country.
During the competition, participants were quizzed on the GNBS and the QI Services it provides including Metrology and Standards. Questions posed to the pupils were based on information contained in the “Standards in Academia Booklet” produced by the Bureau and issued to participating schools prior to the competition.
The objective of hosting the competition in primary schools was to ensure that younger Guyanese also understand the importance of QI related concepts long before they become entrepreneurs, active consumers, and leaders in society. Ultimately, this will add significant value to Guyana’s rapidly transforming economy.
Winning at the regional level of the competition were Sparta Primary of Region Two (2), Cornelia Ida Primary School of Region Three (3), Chateau Margot Primary – Region four (4), Bath Settlement Primary Region five (5), and Wismar Hill Primary of Region Ten (10). They each received a trophy, while all participating schools received a certificate of participation.
Bath Settlement Primary and Chateau Margot Primary emerged Champion and Runner up, respectively at the finals of the 2022 Competition, which was held on June 21 at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, Georgetown. Both schools received trophies and gift vouchers, while branded prizes were presented to every participant in the finals.
The Best Performer Prize of a brand-new Lenovo tablet was presented to Afferah Ali of Chateau Margot Primary School who was outstanding in her performance throughout the competition. The Next edition of the Competition is slated for 2024.
